Come Behind-the-Scenes with Me.
I formed CandyBomber to produce the FURY Show in 2018, a Mad Max, Fury Road -inspired concert experience. It was a big undertaking and it made a splash which has opened a lot of new doors. Now, though live performance is on Covid pause, we are very fortunate to be moving forward on these things:
Developing a whole new production based on an original story called FRAY from a collaboration among musicians, dancers and visual artists who make video games. Why video games? Because the two main characters in the story, Tullio and Ziya, are brothers who deeply love the video games. In the show, their life story is interwoven between the live action on stage and large screen visuals, where their game avatars take up the challenges they face in real life. If it sounds complex, come on over to Patreon where I’m bringing you along with us step by step.
Designing a stand-alone video game, also called FRAY, to release with the live show when it premieres. This is a fascinating new landscape for CandyBomber, and an exciting collaboration that means new layers of experience for fans of both the live show and the game.
Shooting in January - an all new short dance film for CandyBomber. I can’t seem to stop making dance films, and after our CandyBomber Commissions program last Spring to commission 13 artists from the CandyBomber creative family to make new short works from home for $500 each as a form of artist relief during Covid, this new film allows us to keep our creative muscles working and to keep finding ways to pay artists to work.
I recently met the real Candy Bomber himself, Gail Halvorsen, who recently turned 100 years old. I’ve been in touch with him on FaceTime and I shared that on Patreon. I will continue to speak with him on the phone, and I plan to visit him in Utah in person as soon as I can, taking my Patrons along via video too. His story and his example continue to add meaning and depth for me the more time I spend reading books and watching documentaries about him. He is a person whose engines have always been entirely fuelled by the idea of “service to others,” and it’s a powerful idea for me too as I continue to navigate forward with CandyBomber.
CandyBomber is about bold experiments with music, dance and the visual arts to tell great stories. I'm proud that our projects are continuing to pay artists real money for real work in this upside down time. Patreon is where I'm gathering a group of people who care about this too, and want to support the artists and the making of these new projects with a pledge. Your pledge goes directly into the pockets of the artists. It's sort of like an old fashioned Wurlitzer - in goes a coin and out comes the "music". Patreon is also THE place I can take you behind the scenes on these unique collaborations to get to know the artists and to watch us at work. I can share openly with you, ask for your opinions, and when Covid allows, invite you to be the first to see all of this creative output in person. You'll be the first to see a lot of things along the way too as we take advantage of this digital landscape to share and release our work.
One thing FURY taught me is that bold ideas win. We have a clear vision for CandyBomber, and its engines are revving with potential. We will need more resources to continue on our flight path, but I also want to say how powerful the sense of encouragement is that we derive from knowing there are people who have joined our team. I think about it every single day and it means a lot. Thank you. I am very excited about what’s to come, and I look forward to having you on board.
Your Pilot,
CandyBomber Kate
